What Are Cookies
Cookies are small text files stored on your device when you visit Zinger Networks
(zinger.network). They help us provide you with a better experience by remembering your
preferences and maintaining your session.
How We Use Cookies
1. Essential Cookies (Required)
These cookies are necessary for Zinger Networks to function properly. They cannot be disabled:
-
Session Cookie (_zing_session): Maintains your login session and keeps you authenticated.
This cookie is deleted when you close your browser.
-
CSRF Token: Protects against cross-site request forgery attacks by verifying that
requests come from legitimate users.
-
Authentication Token: Securely stores your authentication state when using "Remember me"
during login.
2. Preference Cookies
These cookies remember your choices and preferences:
-
Theme Preference (theme): Remembers whether you prefer light or dark mode
-
Language Preference: Stores your preferred language (if multiple languages are supported)
-
Display Settings: Remembers your timeline and display preferences
3. Federation Cookies
When you interact with content from other Zing nodes:
-
Federation Token: Temporary token used for secure communication with other trusted nodes
-
Remote Authentication: When following users on other nodes, temporary cookies facilitate
the federation handshake
Important: These federation cookies are specific to zinger.network and are not
shared with other nodes. Each node manages its own cookies independently.

Local Storage
In addition to cookies, Zinger Networks may use browser local storage for:
- Draft Posts: Temporarily saves your post drafts to prevent data loss
- UI State: Remembers collapsed/expanded sections and scroll positions
- Cache: Stores recently viewed content for faster loading
Third-Party Cookies
Zinger Networks does not use third-party advertising or tracking cookies. However, when you interact
with federated content:
- Media from other domains (avatars, images) may set their own cookies
- Embedded content from other Zing nodes operates under their cookie policies
- External links you click may set cookies from those websites

Do Not Track
Zinger Networks respects "Do Not Track" browser settings. However, essential cookies required for
functionality will still be used. We do not track you across other websites.
Federation & Cookies
The federated nature of Zing means:
-
Node Independence: Each Zing node manages its own cookies. Zinger Networks
cannot control cookies set by other nodes.
-
Cross-Node Content: When viewing content from other nodes, you remain on
zinger.network. Only our cookies are set, not the remote node's cookies.
-
Federation Tokens: Temporary authentication tokens facilitate secure communication
between nodes but are not persistent cookies.
